In 1990, the Institute of Languages was founded at the University as a central pedagogical and research department, controlled by the Rector. The Institute of Languages had four departments and its mission was to provide language training for students at all faculties. The Department of the English Language (KAJ) had a significant position since the creation of the Institute of Languages, as most university students studied English as their first or second foreign language. The dominant position of the English language required and also, still requires teachers of the English language department with an exceptionally responsible approach in order to fulfill demanding pedagogical and scientific tasks.
On the 1 June 2010, the Faculty of Applied Languages was established at the University of Economics in Bratislava. The establishment of the Faculty of Applied Languages has led to restructuring the institute in which specialized departments were formed. A temporary merger of the Department of the English and German language also took place. The Department of English and German was set up, in which two sections came into existence: Department of the English and German language. At the beginning of 2011, the Department was divided into two departments again, the Department of the English language and the Department of the German language.
Currently, Department of the English language (KAJ) provides not only teaching of specialized language at all faculties of the University of Economics in Bratislava, but also, it offers specialized courses on the Bachelor and Master level. Department of the English language provides teaching in the state-exam courses at the Faculty of International Relations, which are completed by the state examination. In addition to pedagogical work, all teachers of Department of the English language deal with research activities whose results are published in domestic and international journals. The pedagogical staff also actively participate in domestic and international conferences.
