From September 8 to 10, the University of Hildesheim (Germany) hosted an international conference entitled "Using Corpora in Contrastive and Translation Studies" (UCCTS 2025) was held at the University of Hildesheim (Germany), focusing on promoting corpus methodology as an effective tool in the study of contrastive linguistics and translation.
Our faculty was successfully represented by Mgr. Filip Kalaš, PhD. from the Department of Linguistics and Translation Studies, who presented a paper entitled "How do translators deal with repeated reporting verbs in literary texts? A Multifactorial Study in the English-to-Slovak language pair".
This research was conducted in collaboration with Łukasz Grabowski and Daniel Borysowski from the University of Opole in Poland and Lorenzo Mastropiero from the University of Insubria in Italy. The paper focused on how translators deal with repeated reporting verbs in literary texts when translating from English into Slovak. By analyzing a corpus of 14 novels, from which they obtained more than 5,000 occurrences of reporting verbs, the researchers examined their Slovak equivalents. They analyzed which factors, such as frequency of occurrence, semantic category, or translator influence, affect whether translators retain repetition or replace it. The results, which revealed subtle stylistic differences, were achieved through the application of multifactorial statistical models.
The conference also served as a platform for the exchange of knowledge between experts from different countries, thereby contributing to the advancement of linguistics and translation. Among the interesting presentations was one by Dylan Glynn from the University of Paris, who introduced the so-called Behavioural Profile Approach, an approach to comparing form and meaning across languages, which he illustrated with case studies from the areas of naming anxiety, grammatical expression of the future, and strategies for bragging on Instagram.
